Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) is a 376-bed healthcare facility located in the heart of Kansas City. As a member of the Adventist Health System, there is a particular interest in wellness advocacy throughout the hospital. The renovation of the servery allows this space to act as a centerpiece for the hospital and as tangible evidence of the Adventist Health System wellness philosophy.
RDG partnered with the architect to lead a design process to completely reinvent the food experience at SMMC. There is an emphasis on a healthier lifestyle fostered through the placement of each serving station, food cues, and prominent merchandising of healthier food options first. This allows the customer to make their food selection in an appropriate, health-centric environment.
The servery features an Action Station to promote an interactive culinary experience during the various meal periods throughout the day. During off times, the Action Station is also set for a chef to perform cooking demonstrations and provide culinary instruction to patrons. Over thirty people can participate right in the servery. Others can view the action over monitors in the dining room and through a look-in window adjacent to the servery.
We are grateful for the opportunities that we have been given to do great work with amazing organizations. Please reach out to us to start a conversation about your food experience challenges, to kick around creative ideas for your space, or just to gather input on how the foodservice design process even works. We would be excited to listen and to share.
