Second Helpings is a non-profit organization that accepts food from grocers and other local food suppliers and in turn, supplies prepared food (hot and cold) to over seventy (70) agencies and ministries across Central Indiana.
Corresponding with the increase in poverty and hunger in Central Indiana, the need for Second Helpings’ services has grown. RDG worked with the client and a local architect to double the capacity of the facility while utilizing as much existing equipment as possible and staying within the existing physical footprint of the building. The fast-track project centered on flow, function, and food safety. The three biggest priorities were expanded refrigeration capacity, additional cooking capacity, and the elimination of raw food / prepared food crossover (logistics & flow).
The finished production kitchen doubled the capacity from under 3,000 meals per day to over 6,000 meals per day.
We are grateful for the opportunities that we have been given to do great work with amazing organizations. Please reach out to us to start a conversation about your food experience challenges, to kick around creative ideas for your space, or just to gather input on how the foodservice design process even works. We would be excited to listen and to share.
